On
a quickly drying track, Team BRM has made an impressive start to
Round 4 of the 2004 Australian F3 championship, by placing both
cars on top of their respective classes in the first qualifying
session at Winton Motor Raceway.
In
the wet second session, Both Team BRM Cars placed in the top 4 in
challenging conditions for both the team and drivers. The session
featured a starring role from Nic Jordan, who placed an incredible
fourth outright driving a car not set up for the trying conditions.
After
hovering around the top of the timesheets in Friday practice, and
an exciting qualifying session where he and Ian Dyk traded fastest
times lap after lap, Karl Reindler scored his first ever F3 pole
position in today’s opening qualifying session.
Karl
set an impressive 1m18.3074 to top the 13 car field, over six-tenths
faster than second position.
Reindler’s
teammate Nic Jordan lapped the 3km Winton track in a time of 1m21.1334
to place him firmly on top of the trophy class field by a comfortable
margin of over two seconds.
The
afternoon session to decide the grid for race two was run in wet
conditions, and Karl Reindler placed the #19 car in third position
with a time of 1m32.6499. Karl battled the glare on the track surface,
and was prevented setting a quicker time by the red flag during
the session.
In
an incredible performance, Trophy class sensation Nic Jordan qualified
fourth outright in his Dallara F398, ahead of three faster Championship
class cars, to give him two pole positions in Trophy class for the
weekend. Nic’s time of 1m32.8190 was only a few tenths behind
his teammate.
At
the end of the second session, Team owner Bronte Rundle expressed
his delight at the team’s performance. “It has been an
excellent day for Team BRM in very wet conditions,” he said.
“In the first session Karl drove Brilliantly to score pole
position after a great battle with Ian Dyk. In the second session
Karl was caught out by the red flag, but third is still a strong
result.”
Nic
Jordan’s performances today also drew praise from the team
owner. “Nic was brilliant, and to be in fourth place on the
grid, in a trophy class car against this field is a tremendous performance.
Keep in mind that yesterday (Friday) was the first time he had ever
seen the track, which makes the performance even better.”
Rundle
believes that the team is in good shape for tomorrow’s two
races. “Both of the cars are very good around here, and we
are very much looking forward to tomorrow.”
The
two 13 lap races will be held at 11:35am and 3:30pm tomorrow.
