18 Septembre 2004 – In his ninth European Formula Renault race
of the season Paul Meijer finished second twice today at Oschersleben
(Germany). By passing his opponent Colin Fleming in spectacular
fashion Meijer was able to score an excellent second place. During
the final heat Meijer consolidated his second position from the
start and kept it the entire race. Due to this result Meijer took
48 EC points and climbed one position in the championship to sixth
with 174 points. With this performance the Bilthoven based driver
showed that there is a new Dutch talent again.
For
years the European Formula Renault 2000 Championship is known for
being the official way to higher motorsport classes with races during
all LG Super Racing Weekends. In the European Formula Renault 2000
Championship young drivers are competing with each other with similar
material (chassis, engines, tyres, fuel). In a field of international
top talents, it is impressive when a ‘rookie’ performances
that consistent!
With excellent qualifying results (second and third) Paul Meijer
already had a good prospective for the race. By starting well twice
at the tiny and twisty circuit Meijer defended his position and
even was able to threaten the position of newly crowned European
champion Scott Speed. The Nikon Motorsport driver consolidated his
second position in both races and kept this position until the flag
fell on the 3,667 km long circuit.
Meijer:
“Wow, this is a relief for me! Despite some precarious races
in the European Championship I am very happy I finished the season
with such an excellent result. I have pushed hard in both races
in order to pass race leader Scott Speed but this proved to be impossible.
I am very happy with my podium finishes here at Oschersleben since
people tend to remember your most recent results. My sixth position
in the championship and this double podium at the end of the season
thus is very welcome. I hope to race in a higher class next year!”
