31st July 2004 – Paul Meijer scored a respectable sixth position
during the seventh round of the European Formula Renault 2000 Championship.
At the Spa-Francorchamps circuit the best Dutch competitor drove
an impressive race and added ten important points to hid total.
For
years the European Formula Renault 2000 Championship is known as
the official talents racing league since all races take place during
all LG Super Racing Weekends. In the European Formula Renault 2000
championship young drivers compete with each other with a similar
package (chassis, engines, tyres, fuel). When a ‘rookie’
performances constantly in an international field of top talents
is an absolute achievement!
With a seventeenth position in qualifying Paul Meijer had to start
the eleven-lap race from the midfield. Duet o a good start the 19-year
old driver of Nikon Motorsport soon found himself in twelfth position.
During the rest of the race the man from Bilthoven overtook several
others and moved up to seventh place. With three laps to go a safety
car situation caused Meijer to loose his lead on the guys behind
him. In the ultimate lap the young driver swaps places with Frenchman
Pagenaud and crosses the line in sixth position. Thanks to this
result Paul Meijer currently is eighth in the championship with
100 points.
Paul:
“Of course it is perfect to score important points for the
championship. I managed to follow the pace of the others and tried
to dive into any gap I saw. If I had not made the mistake yesterday
during qualifying I would definitely made it onto the podium. I
lifted a bit too soon because I thought I had already passed the
finish line. This mistake cost me fifth position on the grid. Despite
all of this I cannot complain about my sixth finishing position.
I will try to keep this pace during the Marlboro Masters at Zandvoort!”
